Section Overview
This section continues along the Cotswold escarpment, offering classic ridge walking with wide, open views before gradually descending towards Dowdeswell. While shorter than some earlier stages, it still includes exposed stretches and steady undulations typical of escarpment terrain.
You’ll walk above Cheltenham for much of the route, with panoramic views across the Severn Vale, before leaving the higher ground and dropping into quieter countryside.
Cleeve Common
Leaving Cleeve Hill, the trail crosses open common land. The walking here feels expansive and exposed, with short grass underfoot and few trees for shelter. Livestock often graze on the common, so dogs should be kept under close control.
On a clear day, this stretch provides some of the most uninterrupted views on the northern half of the Cotswold Way.
Along the Escarpment Edge
The path follows the natural curve of the escarpment southwards. The terrain is a mix of grassy tracks and firmer stone paths, generally easy to follow but occasionally uneven. To your right, the land falls away sharply towards Cheltenham and the Vale of Gloucester. To your left, the landscape rolls gently inland across farmland and wooded slopes. Although the gradients are less severe than the climb to Cleeve Hill, the constant undulation makes this a steady rather than leisurely walk.
Descending to Dowdeswell
As you approach Dowdeswell, the trail begins a gradual descent from the high ridge into more sheltered terrain. Woodland sections reappear, and the path becomes less exposed to wind.
Dowdeswell itself is a small rural settlement set near the A40. Facilities are limited, so many walkers plan onward travel towards Leckhampton Hill or Cheltenham.
Dowdeswell
The section ends near Dowdeswell Reservoir and the surrounding countryside. It’s a quieter finish compared to the busier areas around Cleeve Hill, making it a peaceful stopping point if you’re breaking the route into shorter stages.
Transport links are limited, so it’s worth planning pick-ups or onward connections in advance.
