Section Overview
This is the final stage of the Cotswold Way — a varied and rewarding walk that gradually transitions from open countryside into the historic city of Bath. The route combines rolling farmland, wooded valleys and sweeping viewpoints before descending towards the Avon Valley.
There are several steady climbs along the way, but the gradients are generally manageable. The sense of anticipation builds as Bath comes into view, marking the completion of 102 miles of walking across the Cotswolds.
Leaving Cold Ashton
From Cold Ashton, the trail heads south across open fields and along quiet tracks. The landscape feels spacious and gently rolling, with broad views across surrounding hills.
Underfoot conditions are typically good, though pastureland can be muddy in wet weather.
Approaching the Avon Valley
As you progress, the route begins to descend and climb through a series of wooded combes and open slopes. These alternating sections of woodland and hillside give the final stage a varied and engaging feel.
There are occasional viewpoints offering glimpses towards Bath and the Avon Valley, providing a reminder that the journey’s end is approaching.
Claverton Down and Final Views
The trail crosses Claverton Down, where the landscape opens up once more. From here, panoramic views stretch across the city of Bath and beyond.
This is one of the most memorable viewpoints on the southern half of the trail and a fitting prelude to the descent into the city.
Descent into Bath
The final stretch leads downhill through woodland and residential edges before emerging in the centre of Bath. The Cotswold Way officially ends at Bath Abbey, a striking and historic landmark in the heart of the city.
Reaching the abbey marks the completion of the full Cotswold Way — from the market town of Chipping Campden to this UNESCO-listed city.
Bath
Bath offers extensive facilities, transport connections, accommodation and attractions. Many walkers choose to celebrate their achievement with a meal, a visit to the Roman Baths, or simply time spent exploring the city’s historic streets. Congratulations — you’ve completed the Cotswold Way!
