DOWDESWELL WEATHER

Section Overview

This shorter escarpment section combines woodland paths, steady climbing and expansive viewpoints above Cheltenham. While not especially long, the ascent back onto high ground gives it a moderately challenging feel.

You’ll move from the quieter countryside around Dowdeswell through shaded woodland before emerging onto open common land at Leckhampton Hill — one of the most recognisable viewpoints on the Cotswold Way.

Leaving Dowdeswell

The trail begins by heading south from Dowdeswell, gradually climbing through farmland and wooded slopes. The initial ascent is steady but manageable, with well-defined paths and occasional clearings offering glimpses back towards Cleeve Hill.

In wet weather, woodland sections can become muddy and slippery underfoot.

Woodland and Escarpment Paths

As the climb continues, the path winds through mixed woodland, providing shelter from wind but adding short, sharper rises along the way. The walking here feels quieter and more enclosed compared to the exposed ridge sections earlier on the trail.

Eventually, the trees thin and the landscape begins to open out once more as you approach Leckhampton Hill.

Leckhampton Hill

Leckhampton Hill is open common land and a popular local beauty spot. The broad grassy slopes offer impressive views across Cheltenham, Gloucester and the Severn Vale. This is a fine place to pause and take in the scenery before continuing south. The hill can feel exposed in windy conditions, and grazing livestock are common, so take care with dogs.

The section ends on the high ground of Leckhampton Hill, close to access points for Cheltenham if you’re arranging transport or accommodation.
